- Base
- 9 cups Rice Chex cereal – The classic base for this snack. You can also use Corn Chex or Crispix.
- Chocolate Peanut Butter Mixture
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips – Semi-sweet gives the best balance of sweet and rich flavor.
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter – Smooth peanut butter works best; avoid natural types that separate.
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter – Helps thin out the mixture and adds richness.
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract – Optional but adds warmth and depth.
- Coating
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar – The key to that sweet powdery finish everyone loves.
Melt the Chocolate Mixture
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, then heat again for another 20–30 seconds until smooth. (Alternatively, melt over a double boiler on low heat.)
Stir in vanilla extract once melted — the aroma alone will make your kitchen smell amazing.
Coat the Cereal
Place your Rice Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl. Pour the warm chocolate peanut butter mixture over the cereal.
Using a rubber spatula, gently fold until all the cereal pieces are evenly coated. Take your time here — you want every nook and cranny covered in that creamy chocolate goodness.
Shake on the Powdered Sugar
Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-top bag (or two smaller ones). Add the powdered sugar, seal the bag tightly, and shake it like you mean it!
Keep shaking until all the cereal is evenly coated and no chocolatey bits peek through. This part is fun for kids — or adults who just need a little stress relief.
Cool and Serve
Spread the coated puppy chow on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to cool and set. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes until the chocolate firms up.
Once cooled, transfer to a serving bowl — but fair warning: it’s hard not to grab a handful first (for quality control, of course).
-
Don’t skip cooling. Warm puppy chow can clump together. Let it set before storing.
-
Measure the powdered sugar! Too much can make it overly sweet; too little, and it’ll be sticky.
-
Work quickly. Once the chocolate mixture hits the cereal, it begins to set — mix fast for even coating.
-
Use a large bowl. You’ll need plenty of room to stir without breaking the cereal pieces.
-
Avoid natural peanut butter. The oil separation changes the texture of the chocolate mixture.
