  • Baking powder
  • Cold water or milk
  • Salt

Instructions
 

  • Peel and rinse onions. Slice off top/root ends and peel skin.
  • Slice onions into 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick rings. Separate rings and pat dry.
  • Prepare seasoned flour mixture with flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  • Dredge onion rings in seasoned flour. Shake off excess.
  • Mix batter using flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and cold beer or sparkling water.
  • Dip floured rings in batter and let excess drip off.
  • Roll in panko breadcrumbs or desired crunchy coating.
  • Heat vegetable or canola oil to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry onion rings in small batches until golden brown.
  • Drain on a wire rack or paper towels.
  • Immediately sprinkle with kosher salt.
  • Serve with homemade ranch sauce or desired dip.

Notes

  • Use sweet onions like Vidalia for a milder flavor.
  • Double-coating (flour, batter, and panko) ensures the crispiest texture.
  • Maintain consistent oil temperature between 350–375°F.
  • For an egg-free version, omit eggs and adjust liquid.
  • To make them without breadcrumbs, try crushed cornflakes or rice flour.
  • Air fryer method: cook at 375°F for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in oven or air fryer, not microwave.
  • Freeze fried rings by flash freezing, then storing in a freezer bag. Reheat at 400°F for 15 minutes.
