Ingredients

  • For the Bread
  • 1 loaf of French bread or Italian bread – Split lengthwise. Choose one with a crisp crust and soft inside.
  • ½ cup 1 stick unsalted butter, softened – This spreads easily and gives that rich, buttery flavor.
  • 4 –5 cloves fresh garlic minced – The heart of the recipe! Adjust based on how garlicky you like it.
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley – Adds color and freshness.
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder – Deepens the garlic flavor even more.
  • Salt to taste – Enhances the flavor and balances the butter.
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese optional – For a cheesy, savory twist.
  • Optional for Cheesy Garlic Bread
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese – Melty and gooey for that extra indulgence.
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan – Adds a salty nutty finish.

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment for easy cleanup.
  • Prepare the Garlic Butter Mixture
  • In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, minced garlic, garlic powder, parsley, and a pinch of salt.
  • If you’re feeling fancy, add a little grated Parmesan cheese or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for brightness. Stir until smooth and well combined — this is your delicious garlic butter mixture.
  • Spread the Butter
  • Slice your French or Italian bread in half lengthwise. Lay the halves cut-side up on your baking sheet.
  • Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly across both halves, making sure to get all the way to the edges. That’s where the magic crispy bits happen!
  • Add Cheese (Optional)
  • If you’re going for cheesy garlic bread, sprinkle a generous layer of mozzarella and a dusting of Parmesan cheese on top.
  • Bake Until Golden
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10–15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the butter has soaked into the bread.
  • If you want extra crispiness, switch to broil for the last 1–2 minutes — but watch carefully! It goes from golden to burnt fast.
  • Slice & Serve
  • Remove from the oven and let it rest for a minute. Slice into thick pieces and serve warm.
  • That’s it! You’ve just made the best homemade garlic bread — buttery, crisp on the outside, and melt-in-your-mouth soft on the inside.

Notes

  • Don’t use cold butter: It won’t spread evenly. Always soften it first for smooth blending.
  • Watch your timing: Garlic burns quickly! Keep an eye during the last few minutes of baking.
  • Use fresh garlic: Minced garlic gives better flavor than jarred varieties.
  • Avoid soggy bread: Don’t overuse butter — a light, even layer gives crisp texture.
  • Make it ahead: Spread the butter on your bread, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate or freeze until needed.
  • Storage: Wrap leftover garlic bread tightly in foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in oven at 350°F for 10 minutes, or in an air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes.
  • Freezing: Freeze uncooked garlic bread wrapped tightly for up to 3 months; bake directly from frozen for 15–20 minutes at 400°F.
