Ingredients

  • For the Fried Apples
  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples or any firm apple, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 stick, cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar adjust for sweetness
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg optional, for warmth
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional Garnishes
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • A dollop of whipped cream
  • Fresh mint for serving

Instructions

  • Prep the apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch wedges. Try to keep the slices even for consistent cooking.
  • Melt the butter: Place a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt, coating the pan evenly.
  • Add the apples: Place the sliced apples in the skillet. Stir gently to coat with melted butter.
  • Sprinkle sugar & spices: Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine.
  • Cook until tender: Continue cooking for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The apples should soften but not turn mushy. The sauce will thicken into a glossy, caramel-like coating.
  • Finish with vanilla: Stir in vanilla extract and cook 1 more minute.
  • Serve warm: Spoon the fried apples into bowls or serve directly from the skillet for a rustic presentation.

Notes

  • Don’t overcook: Stop when the apples are fork-tender. Overcooked apples turn mushy.
  • Use the right apples: Firm varieties hold shape best. Granny Smith for tartness, Honeycrisp for sweetness.
  • Stir occasionally, not constantly: This allows caramelization to develop without breaking down the apples.
  • Balance the sugar: Start with less if your apples are naturally sweet. You can always add more.
  • Add vanilla at the end: Heat can dull its flavor, so stir it in right before serving.
